Some Beech, Somewhere

12″ x 9″ oil on a canvas panel

I began this as a plein air painting .  This beech tree is beside the old 1840’s Setzer log school house in Salisbury.  I established the value patterns first, but lost some of them as the shadows on the tree branches changed.  When I got to my studio, it looked pretty boring.  So I worked on the values and tried to add more interest with color.  And yes, there were some golden leaves still clinging to the branches.
